Terratek is one of the most experienced renewable energy contractors in British Columbia. For those of you that are just getting started here is a brief description of our two most popular renewable energy systems for residential, commercial or institutional buildings:
Solar Power / Solar Energy – Quick Facts
The higher the solar potential for a region, the easier and more affordable it is to meet energy production goals. There is a common misconception that BC doesn’t get enough sun for solar systems but in Vancouver, one kilowatt of solar panels provides up to 1026 kWhs a year. In Victoria, one kilowatt of solar panels provides up to 1110 kWhs of energy per year and in Kelowna or the Okanagan, one kilowatt of solar panels can provides up to 1151 kWhs per year. In comparison to Berlin, Germany, the leading country in solar installations, the average annual sunshine potential is less than 900 kWhs. We think we are doing pretty well. While solar panels have a higher production capacity on sunny days, our cooler west coast summer temperatures actually make solar panels more efficient, since heat decreases efficiency. Solar Domestic Hot Water – Quick Facts
In Vancouver, on Vancouver Island and in the Okanagan, hot water is the second highest energy demand in an average household, representing about 25%-35% of total energy consumption in BC homes. Depending on usage, commercial or institutional buildings can have a higher percentage than this. Installing a solar hot water system offers one of the most cost-effective renewable energy solutions to reducing your electric or gas bill by alleviating reliance on utility-produced energy sources. When properly sized and installed, a solar hot water system can provide up to 60% of your annual hot water needs. For more information about solar hot water, click here.
